Voice Lessons with Freya Meredith
Teaching Philosophy
While learning to use our voices can be liberating, inspiring and celebratory, it can also be confusing and exhausting. Even still, as a vocalist and voice practitioner with 20 years experience, I still come across conflicting and potentially harmful information about vocal tuition. In the age of the internet, where it seems like we have the knowledge of the world literally at our fingertips, it can be hard to decipher what is best for our own unique voices. This is why I am passionate about presenting vocal guidance and tuition in the most factual and flexible way. As a researcher, I am proud to have the most current and relevant voice research available to me to implement with students. As a voice teacher, I am also gifted with the experience of moulding appropriate tuition to suit every students’ singular needs and goals. I believe that quality voice teaching needs to be objective – no one technique suits all. Every single larynx is unique and special, therefore it is essential that I keep training myself to provide you with exactly what you need. I approach voice lessons in both a holistic and science-based way. I examine and explore the voice through sound, feeling and perception, with my focus on guiding students into introducing and discovering their voice as well as its ability from different angles.
My goals not only include providing unique and informed vocal tuition, but also to create an inclusive and safe space for singers to truly express who they are through their voices. Singing is so much more than sounding a particular way. It’s a part of our identity and it’s important that we learn to use our voices in a way that makes us feel uniquely us. While I may be considered your vocal teacher and mentor, I believe that the art of learning to sing involves a partnership where mutual respect, trust and love for singing is expressed. My end-goal for all my students is this: I not only want you to discover your voice and use it to fulfill life-long skills and dreams, but I also want you to feel empowered to share what you have learnt with others and to continue exploring the voice with the most informed ability.
